Artificial intelligence is often discussed as if it automatically increases human intelligence. That framing is convenient, but incomplete.

AI does not make people smarter by default. What it does is amplify existing cognitive habits. Depending on how it is used, it can either weaken independent thinking or meaningfully strengthen it.

How People Relate to AI

As AI becomes more visible, several distinct patterns of relationship are emerging.

The first is substitution.

  • “Summarize this so I don’t have to read it.”

  • “Decide what I should say.”

It feels efficient. But it quietly removes the friction that thinking, judgment, and communication require. Over time, confidence increases while understanding stagnates. The tool shifts from assistant to authority.

The second pattern is augmentation.

Here, AI is used as a challenger:

  • “Here’s my reasoning. What am I missing?”

  • “What assumptions am I making?”

  • “Give me the strongest counterargument.”

In this posture, the person remains responsible for forming views, assigning meaning, and making decisions. AI becomes a sparring partner, not a surrogate.

Only this second mode reliably compounds intelligence.

Absence and Refusal

Not everyone engages at all.

Some people are broadly aware that “AI” exists, but it remains abstract and distant — something discussed in headlines or social media, not something worth examining closely.

Others understand what AI is at a basic level but consciously dismiss it. Their stance is not ignorance, but refusal: “It’s not for me.”

This group is not new.

Every major technological shift produces it.

“I don’t trust these motor cars. They’re loud and dangerous. I prefer my horse.”

“I don’t need email. Phone calls work fine.”

“I don’t like smartphones. I don’t want to live that way.”

The individuals change. The dynamics do not.

Choosing not to engage can be principled. But it is not neutral.

When a technology reshapes communication, coordination, and expectation at a societal level, opting out does not preserve the old world. It simply means interacting with a new one from the margins.

The distinction that matters is not adoption versus rejection, but examined choice versus disengaged dismissal. Only the former preserves agency over time.

A useful metaphor comes from The Matrix.

The Oracle does not determine outcomes.

Interpretation and choice do.

AI functions in a similar way.

Modern systems absorb and synthesize information at a scale no human can match. This creates the appearance of omniscience. But what emerges depends less on what the system knows than on:

  • The context provided

  • The assumptions embedded in the prompt

  • The quality of the questions asked

Those who treat AI as unquestionable authority receive shallow certainty. Those who engage it thoughtfully extract deeper insight.

This moment did not begin with AI.

Before mobile phones were ubiquitous, strangers routinely spoke to one another. Conversations started in cafés, on trains, in lines, in waiting rooms. Many were trivial. Some were awkward. A few became lasting connections.

As phones became ever-present, something subtle changed. Public spaces grew quieter. Idle moments disappeared. Eye contact faded. What had once been social friction became something to avoid.

People didn’t stop wanting connection.

They stopped practicing it.

I’ve seen social media videos where two people no longer speak directly. One asks AI what to say. The other asks AI how to respond. The exchange escalates into something increasingly absurd — not because AI fails, but because human agency quietly exits the loop.

Played for humor, it looks harmless. But underneath it is a real pattern.

Conversation is not merely information exchange. It is how people learn timing, empathy, risk, accountability, and repair. When those are delegated, the skill doesn’t remain dormant — it atrophies.

At that point, the tool is no longer supporting communication.

It is standing in for it.

The Human Cost of Disconnection

The consequences are not abstract.

As direct connection erodes, more people are left lonely, withdrawn, and unsure how to re-enter the world without assistance. For some, the isolation becomes so complete that escape feels impossible.

I’ve seen this personally. One of my closest friends chose that escape. Other friends of mine — people with broad social circles and outwardly full lives — have experienced this tragedy more than once.

These are not fringe cases. They are signals.

When people lose confidence in their ability to think clearly, speak honestly, or connect directly, withdrawal becomes normalized. Silence feels safer than risk. And once someone feels truly unseen, the distance back can feel insurmountable.

This is not about technology causing harm in isolation.

It is about what happens when tools replace participation rather than supporting it.

A Shift of a Different Order

It’s worth acknowledging something carefully.

Human history has seen many transformative technologies: writing, printing, electricity, industrial machinery, computing, the internet. Each reshaped how people lived and related to one another.

AI is different in kind.

For the first time, a widely accessible tool engages directly with language, reasoning, and judgment — the very faculties through which humans interpret reality and understand themselves.

This is not merely a change in capability.

It is a change in where thinking happens.

That does not require exaggeration to matter. It places AI in a small category of technologies that alter the conditions under which agency itself is exercised.

That is why posture matters so much.

AI as a Cognitive Exoskeleton

A more useful way to think about AI is not as a brain replacement, but as a cognitive exoskeleton.

It can extend working memory, reduce mechanical friction, accelerate iteration, and make reasoning visible.

But it does not choose direction.

It does not assign meaning.

It does not take responsibility.

Those remain human functions.

Why Course Correction Still Matters

This trajectory is not inevitable.

Human judgment and human connection are practiced skills. They can weaken, but they can also be rebuilt — if what is being lost is noticed and taken seriously.

AI will shape behavior in the direction it is used. If it replaces thinking, speaking, and presence, it will deepen isolation. If it challenges people to reflect, articulate, and engage deliberately, it can strengthen them.

The window for course correction is still open. But it requires intention, not just better tools.

For some, it will replace thinking — and eventually presence.
